APPEAL FOR ACTION AGAINST THE MARCH FOR LIFE (24TH MARCH 2013)
We need to respond to this attack on women’s rights!
We are worried. For a number
of years the so-called ‘pro-life’ movement has organized a march for life with
the central demand to ban the right to abortion. Alongside this yearly march
they stage protests outside clinics that provide abortions under the banner of
the ‘Sinterklaasgroep’. They stand outside clinics with pictures of fetuses to
intimidate and incriminate women. Before it was explicitly banned, they threw
holy water at the patients. It’s unacceptable that women are attacked like this
at such a vulnerable moment. We can not allow this.
In recent years a reaction was
always organised. In march 2012 over 2.000 people responded to the appeal of
the Abortion Rights platform to defend the right to abortion. We feel that it
is dangerous to let these reactionary ideas go unchallenged. It’s crucial to
reply.
In Ireland the death of Savita
Halappanavar reminded us that the ban on Abortion costs lives. This young woman
died in October 2012 due to complications during her pregnancy. Her life could
have been saved with an abortion. Protests took place across Ireland and in
multiple other countries, e.g. Belgium, to contest the policies of the Irish
government. Ireland is not the only country in Europe where the right to
abortion is denied (e.g. Cyprus, Malta, Poland).
In many countries today the right to abortion is put under pressure, e.g.
Spain. The Spanish government wants to limit the right to abortion by forcing
women to explain their choice. The repeating budget cuts have put pressure on
the financing. The development of the crisis, and the social problems that
sprout from it, give room for reactionary forces. We can not allow this.
We are worried that the crisis
hits the poorest layers hardest, precisely these layers in which women are
overrepresented. The dreadful financial situation pushes woman to have an
abortion, even when they would not consider this if financial problems were not
an issue. The ‘pro-life’ movement hypocritically uses the financial worries to
build support for reactionary ideas. We demand real freedom of choice for women
and so defend the right to abortion. Ideally the period in chich legal abortion
is allowed should be expanded. We also think that defence of the right to
abortion should be linked to social demands: the right to a sable income that
allows for a comfortable life, child
benefits that cover the real costs of having a child, public services that allow
women to combine a job with motherhood … Such a program guarantees that no
woman is forced to consider an abortion out of financial reasons.
We think it is absolutely necessary to organize
a counter protest on 24 march 2013, when the march for life is to take place.
Who, where and for what type of protest, we can still discuss. We ask you to
join the appeal, sign it and spread it to the maximum amount of people and
organizations.

L’ACTION CONTRE LA MARCHE POUR LA VIE DU 24 MARS 2013
Ne laisse
pas passer cette attaque sur les droits des femmes !
Nous nous inquiétons. Depuis quelques années le mouvement soi-disant
pro-vie organise une Marche pour la Vie, défendant l’abolition du droit à
l’avortement. En plus de cette manifestation annuelle, il y a des actions
devant des centres pratiquant des avortements au nom du groupe “Sinterklaas”.
Ils sont présents à la porte des centres avec des photos de fœtus pour
intimider et culpabiliser les femmes qui y viennent. Quand ça ne leur est pas
encore interdit, ils jettent même de l'eau bénite sur les patientes des
centres. Il est inacceptable que les femmes soient attaquées de cette façon
dans un moment aussi vulnérable. Nous ne pouvons pas permettre cela.
Les dernières années une réaction contre cette Marche pour la Vie était à
chaque fois organisée. En mars 2012, un appel de la campagne Abortus Right a rassemblé plus de 2000 personnes pour
défendre le droit à l’avortement. Il semble que, cette année, la plateforme Abortus Right ne puisse pas réorganiser
une action. Nous pensons que laisser le champ libre à ces idées réactionnaires
est dangereux et que nous avons besoin de construire une réponse.
En Irlande, la mort de Savita Halappanavar nous a rappelé que l’interdiction
de l’avortement tue. Cette jeune femme est décédée en octobre 2012 suite aux
complications de sa grossesse. Sa vie aurait pu être sauvée si un avortement
avait été pratiqué. Des actions de protestation ont eu lieu dans plusieurs
pays, y compris en Belgique, pour dénoncer la politique du gouvernement
irlandais. En Europe, l’Irlande n’est pas le seul pays où le droit à
l’avortement n’est toujours pas reconnu (Chypre, Malte et Pologne).
De plus, le droit à l'avortement est également mis fortement sous pression
dans plusieurs autres pays comme l’Espagne. Le gouvernement espagnol veut
limiter le droit à l'avortement en obligeant les femmes à justifier leur choix.
Les plans d’austérité successifs ont mis la pression sur les financements
disponibles. Les développements de la crise, et les bouleversements sociaux qui
en découlent, vont laisser un espace aux forces réactionnaires. Nous ne pouvons
pas l’accepter.
Nous nous inquiétons parce que la crise frappe durement les couches les
plus pauvres, où les femmes sont surreprésentées. Cette mauvaise situation
financière pousse des femmes à choisir un avortement qu’elles ne feraient pas
si leur situation financière était meilleure. Le mouvement « pro-vie »
joue hypocritement sur ce malaise social pour faire passer ses idées
réactionnaires. Nous
revendiquons un véritable choix pour les femmes : le
maintien du droit à l’avortement avec de préférence un allongement du temps
pendant lequel il est légal d’avorter. Mais nous pensons qu’il est également important
de lier la défense du droit à l’avortement aux revendications sociales : le
droit à un revenu stable et suffisant pour vivre confortablement par une
augmentation des salaires et de toutes les allocations sociales ; des
allocations familiales couvrant réellement le coût d’un enfant ; des services
publics permettant aux femmes de combiner travail et famille... Ce programme
doit garantir qu’aucune femme ne se fasse avorter pour des raisons
principalement financières.
Nous pensons qu’il est absolument nécessaire d’organiser une action de
protestation le 24 mars 2013, date de la
nouvelle « Marche pour la vie ». Nous devons encore discuter quel
type d’action, comment l’organiser et où la faire. Nous vous appelons de nous
rejoindre dans cet appel, de le signer et de le faire passer à autant de gens
et d’organisations possibles.

OPROEP VOOR EEN ACTIE TEGEN DE MARS VOOR HET LEVEN
(24 MAART 2013)
Laat de aanval op vrouwenrechten niet onbeantwoord!
Wij zijn bezorgd. Sinds enkele
jaren organiseert de zogenaamde prolife-beweging een Mars voor het Leven met
als centrale eis de afschaffing van het recht op abortus. Bovenop deze
jaarlijkse betoging organiseren ze in naam van de “Sinterklaasgroep” acties aan
de centra die abortus toepassen. Ze zijn er aanwezig aan de ingang van de
centra met foto’s van foetussen om de vrouwen die er komen te intimideren en
een schuldgevoel aan te praten. Toen het hen nog niet expliciet verboden werd,
gooiden ze zelfs gewijd water op de patiënten. Het is onaanvaardbaar dat
vrouwen op die manier aangevallen worden op zo’n kwetsbaar moment. We kunnen
dit niet toelaten.
De laatste jaren werd steeds
een reactie georganiseerd. In maart 2012 bracht een oproep van het platform
Abortus Right meer dan 2000 mensen samen om het recht op abortus te verdedigen.
Dit jaar blijkt het platform geen reactie te kunnen organiseren. We denken dat
het gevaarlijk is vrij spel te laten aan deze reactionaire ideeën. Het is
noodzakelijk hen van antwoord te dienen.
In Ierland heeft de dood van
Savita Halappanavar er ons aan herinnerd dat het verbod op abortus levens kost.
Deze jonge vrouw overleed in oktober 2012 aan complicaties tijdens haar
zwangerschap. Haar leven had gered kunnen worden door een abortus toe te
passen. Protestacties vonden plaats in Ierland en in verschillende andere
landen, o.a. in België, om de politiek van de Ierse regering aan te klagen.
Ierland is ook niet het enige land in Europa waar het recht op abortus nog
steeds niet erkend is (Cyprus, Malta en Polen).
Bovendien wordt het recht op abortus in verschillende andere landen ook
sterk onder druk gezet, o.a. in Spanje. De Spaanse regering wil het recht op
abortus beperken door vrouwen te verplichten hun keuze te rechtvaardigen. De
opeenvolgende besparingsplannen hebben druk gezet op de voorziene financiering.
De ontwikkeling van de crisis en de sociale problemen die eruit voortvloeien,
zullen een ruimte laten aan reactionaire krachten. Wij kunnen dit niet
aanvaarden.
Wij zijn bezorgd omdat de
crisis de armste lagen hard raakt, lagen waarin vrouwen oververtegenwoordigd
zijn. Deze slechte financiële situatie zet vele vrouwen ertoe aan een abortus
te plegen, daar waar ze dit niet zouden doen indien die financiële problemen er
niet zouden zijn. De “prolife”-beweging speelt hypocriet in op deze sociale
malaise om hun reactionaire ideeën ingang te doen vinden. Wij eisen een echte keuze voor vrouwen en dus het behoud van het
recht op abortus. Het best zou de periode waarin men legaal een abortus kan
doen nog uitgebreid worden. We denken echter dat het belangrijk is de
verdediging van het recht op abortus te verbinden met sociale eisen: het recht
op een stabiel inkomen waarvan met comfortabel kan leven, kinderbijslag die reëel
de kosten van een kind dekt, openbare diensten die vrouwen toelaten werk en
kinderen te combineren… Zo’n programma garandeert dat geen enkele vrouw een
abortus moet ondergaan omwille van voornamelijk financiële redenen.
We denken dat het absoluut noodzakelijk is een
tegenactie te organiseren op 24 maart 2013, wanneer de Mars plaats vindt. Wat,
hoe en waar kunnen we samen overeenkomen. We roepen jullie op deze oproep te
vervoegen, te tekenen en door te spelen aan zoveel mogelijk mensen en
organisaties.
